The most popular base for hiking and day trips is Imlil, a 90-minute drive from Marrakech. Trekking season is April–June and September–October; the summit usually requires 2 days and a guide.

Things to Do in Atlas Mountains

Day trip to Imlil and the Ourika Valley

The most common Atlas day trip from Marrakech: 90 min drive to Imlil, short hikes to waterfalls, lunch with a Berber family, and back to Marrakech for dinner.

Trek Mount Toubkal (2 days)

The classic North African summit climb. Day 1: Imlil → Refuge du Toubkal (3,200m). Day 2: pre-dawn summit push to 4,167m, then descent back to Imlil. Requires a licensed guide and basic mountain fitness.

Stay at a Berber eco-lodge

Lodges in the Aroumd or Imlil valleys offer rooftop terraces, home-cooked tagines, and the best stargazing within easy reach of Marrakech.

Hike to Toubkal's waterfalls and Cascades d'Ouzoud

For easier hikes, the Cascades d'Ouzoud (a 3h drive northeast of Marrakech) are Morocco's tallest waterfalls — 110m over three drops.

Visit a Saturday Berber souk

The Saturday market at Asni (on the road to Imlil) is the most authentic weekly Berber souk near Marrakech — locals trading livestock, dried fruit, spices, and crafts.

Frequently Asked Questions about Atlas Mountains

How hard is climbing Mount Toubkal?+

Toubkal is a non-technical summit but it is long and high. The standard 2-day route covers about 22 km with 2,400m of elevation gain. Most travelers with regular hiking fitness can complete it. The main challenges are altitude (4,167m) and the pre-dawn summit push in cold conditions.

Do I need a guide for the Atlas Mountains?+

For day hikes around Imlil and the Ourika Valley, a guide is helpful but not strictly required. For any multi-day trek (including Toubkal), a licensed mountain guide is mandatory and is enforced by the local authorities at the trailhead. Expect to pay $50–80 USD per day for a certified guide.

What is the best time to trek the Atlas Mountains?+

April through June and September through October are the trekking sweet spots — clear weather, no snow, comfortable daytime temperatures (60–75°F). Winter (December–February) brings snow above 2,500m and requires crampons. Summer (July–August) is too hot in the lower valleys but excellent at altitude.
